Parents As Arts Partners (PAAP) is a unique family arts program created in 1998 that engages parents and their children in hands-on, interactive arts education activities including workshops with teaching artists and school arts teachers as well as visits to cultural organizations. PAAP was created, in part, in response to research that demonstrates both the positive impact of parental involvement on a child’s success in school and the effectiveness of the arts as a means of cultivating that involvement. Each PAAP program is distinct, but all successfully build community by addressing a school’s individual needs, enabling participation, and engaging parents, some of whom might otherwise struggle with barriers of language, culture, or work commitments. In addition to providing quality arts experiences for students and their families, these collaborative programs channel direct support to NYC artists and cultural organizations.
In keeping with CAE's commitment to raise awareness of careers in the arts and arts-related industries, CAE requires that at least one of each school's PAAP activities addresses NYS Learning Standard #1 for Career Development & Occupational Studies (CDOS), known as Career Development, by incorporating a brief presentation by a teaching artist or arts administrator about his or her career path. Programs should also be created with an eye to the NYC Department of Education’s Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts—Grades Pre-K–12, which also promote the building of school-to-career awareness of the arts and arts-related industries as an important component of a comprehensive arts education program.
K–12 New York City public schools that have never received funding from CAE are eligible to apply for the 2009-2010 PAAP program—including NYCDOE-approved charter schools. Organizations formerly funded by CAE are eligible to partner with applicant schools again this year.
Each school may only submit one application. Subdivisions of larger school communities (such as mini-schools, academies, or houses) are not eligible to apply independently of the larger school entity.
Schools that have received CAE funding in the past are not eligible for the 2009-2010 PAAP program. Not sure if your school is eligible to apply? View the full list of CAE School Investements to be sure.
Partnering organizations may partner with more than one school. Nonetheless, CAE expects that partnering organizations will customize their services to the particular needs of each school.
